Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti Supports CNIW’s Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies Campaign in the GTA

CNIW News (August 11):

Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti Remark on Healthy Mom and Healthy Baby

Recently, the Centre for New Immigrant Well-Being (CNIW) successfully hosted the launch of the “Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies: Immunization Campaign for Expectant Mothers in the Greater Toronto Area”. This two-year project, funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada through the Immunization Partnership Fund (IPF), aims to improve vaccine uptake and confidence among Chinese immigrant pregnant women, ensuring equitable access to immunization services and promoting the health of both mothers and infants.

Dr. Peizhong Peter Wang, President of CNIW and a professor at the University of Toronto and Memorial University, is leading this initiative. According to the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), pregnant women can benefit from vaccines such as Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccine, the influenza vaccine, and the COVID-19 vaccine. These immunizations are critical for the health of both mother and child.

The project has garnered strong support from various Chinese community groups and individuals. In a recent public video message, the Mayor of Markham voiced his support for this important health initiative. A translated summary of his message in Mandarin is as follows:

“We hope that every child in Markham grows up healthy and happy, and that journey starts at birth. Promoting the health of pregnant women and infants is of utmost importance. I highly commend PHAC’s support for CNIW’s initiative in promoting NACI-recommended vaccines to Chinese immigrant communities in the Greater Toronto Area. I encourage young expectant mothers to engage and seek more information through their healthcare providers and related professionals. Special thanks to CNIW President Dr. Peizhong Peter Wang, Executive Director Dr. Xiao Han, and CNIW Foundation Executive Director, Ms. Ying Cao for their contributions.”
