An Upcoming Lecture by Dr. Gillian A. Kolla: Public Health Research in Contentious Times on Controversial Topics

In an era where public health issues often intersect with societal controversies, understanding and addressing these challenges is more crucial than ever. We are pleased to invite you to an insightful lecture titled “Public Health Research in Contentious Times on Controversial Topics: Harm Reduction, Substance Use, and the Canadian Overdose Crisis” hosted by the CNIW.

This event will delve into the complexities of public health research amidst societal controversies, focusing on harm reduction strategies and their critical role in addressing the ongoing overdose crisis in Canada. Dr. Kolla will share their latest research findings, practical insights, and strategies for navigating the challenges of researching and implementing effective public health interventions in these contentious areas.

Our speaker, Dr. Gillian A. Kolla, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health and Applied Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University. Dr. Kolla graduated from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, with a research focus on her research focused on an examining how the continued criminalization of drug use impacts the uptake and effectiveness of public health interventions. Most recently, Dr. Kolla was a Banting Postdoctoral Researcher at the Canadian institute for Substance Use Research at the University ofVictoria, where she conducted comparative research on the scale-up of prescribed safe-supply programs in BC and Ontario. As a public health researcher, she uses community-based research to explore how to make health and social services more accessible to people who use drugs.
